Black & Silver Half Hog Fly Tying – Step by Step Guide

From: Scott Jackson

Today, we’re diving into a killer classic—the Black & Silver Half Hog. This little beauty is a must-have in your fly box, perfect for those tricky hawthorn hatches or anytime you want to tempt a picky trout. With its flashy silver accents and subtly balanced black body, it’s designed to fool even the wariest fish. Grab your vise, and let’s make a fly that’ll have your fishing buddies asking, “Where did you get that one?”

Step-by-Step Tying Guide

  1. Hook & Thread Setup

    • Place a B100 hook (size 12–14) in your vice.

    • Start with Ultra Thread 70 in black, attaching it near where the wing will begin.

  2. Rib & Body

    • Catch in Uni Mater 16 tinsel with the silver side facing out.

    • Use thread turns to shape the body: wrap anticlockwise, stopping short, then back up.

    • Secure with super glue along the rib and slide the tinsel up the body, leaving slight gaps.

  3. First Part of Wing

    • Trim parachute post (Para Post) to desired length.

    • Take 3 pinches of deer hair, trimming most of the underfur, and align with the Para Post.

    • Two strands of micro crystal flash (flesh & pearl) are added, trimmed slightly longer than Para Post.

    • Secure with pinch-and-loop turns, fold back, and trim excess.

  4. Secondary Wing & Thorax Prep

    • Take a small pinch of medium-dyed fine deer hair, trim, and align tips to Para Post.

    • Tie in pre-notted black fashion tail legs, two per side, securing tightly.

  5. Thorax Construction

    • Apply Irish Sparkle Dub in fiery red and black rabbit with a small amount of peacock blister.

    • Dub fibers onto the thread and slide forward, using wax for smooth control.

    • Add final small pinch of deer hair for wing balance.

  6. Optional Hackle / Half Hog Finish

    • You may add a hackle to make a sage hog or leave as half hog.

    • Form a proportionate head using a black peacock cluster, sweep fibers back, and whip finish.

  7. Finishing Touches

    • Apply varnish on thread, ensuring the eye is clear.

    • Trim stray fibers and enjoy a well-balanced fly ready for action!
