Fly Tying 101: Hot Spot Jigged Pheasant Tail Nymph with Pink UV Accent
With: Fliesbyaspeen
Ah, the classic Hot Spot Jigged Pheasant Tail—a grayling favorite that also drives trout crazy! Dark, natural tones paired with a splash of pink UV make this fly irresistible underwater. Whether you’re floating it in a calm stream or bouncing it along a riffle, this nymph has a way of convincing even the most stubborn fish to bite. Today, we’re going to tie it step by step so you can add this lethal little pattern to your fly box. Let’s get those hooks wet!
🪡 Step-by-Step Fly Tying Guide
Prepare the Hook: Start with a size 16 Demmon J100BL hook. Slide on a 3.0mm black tungsten bead and secure it in your vise.
Start the Thread: Attach Troutline Sumo Thread 50D just behind the bead and wrap a smooth base down the hook shank.
Tie in the Tail: Select 4–6 fibers of Coq De Leon Pardo Langareta De Verano. Measure the tail about the length of the hook shank and tie them in at the bend.
Create the Body: Use Troutline Selected Ring-neck Pheasant Tail Center Feathers in black. Tie in the feather tips at the tail and wrap forward to just behind the bead to form a tapered body.
Add Ribbing: Tie in a strand of Troutline UV Micro Ribbing Quill in pink at the tail and spiral it forward over the body for durability and flash. Secure and trim the excess.
Form the Collar: Select Textreme Pink UV fibers and tie them in behind the bead to form a small collar. This adds subtle UV attraction to trigger strikes.
Finish the Fly: Whip finish behind the bead, trim the thread, and apply a small drop of head cement for durability.
