How to Tie a Spun Flex Holographic Poser Fly – Step by Step Guide

With: Makflies

This guide will show you how to tie a striking Spun Flex Holographic Poser on a size 12 hook, perfect for stillwater fishing with a flashy holographic finish and vibrant red accents.

Materials Needed

  • Size 12 hook

  • Black thread

  • Green Spun Flex (or green base)

  • Olive permanent marker (to tint Spun Flex)

  • Red holographic tinsel

  • Red Spun Flex (for cheeks)

  • White Globrite (for breathers)

  • UV resin or varnish

  • UV curing light or lamp

  • Scissors

  • Bodkin or small tool for adjustment

Step-by-Step Tying Instructions

  1. Start the Thread: Attach black thread just below the hook eye, wrap halfway down the shank, then back up to the middle of the hook.

  2. Attach the Spun Flex Body: Catch green Spun Flex (if you don’t have olive, tint your green Spun Flex with an olive permanent marker). Stretch the Spun Flex along the hook shank towards the bend and back up to the middle, securing it firmly.

  3. Add Red Holographic Tinsel Hot Spot: Tie in a piece of red holographic tinsel at the middle of the hook to create a bright, eye-catching hot spot.

  4. Rub and Lock the Tinsel: Remove the tinsel and lightly rub it 3–4 times to create texture. Then secure it back in place on the hook.

  5. Wrap Spun Flex Over Tinsel: Bring the Spun Flex forward with a slight 1 mm gap between wraps, ensuring the red tinsel remains visible as a segmented rib. Carefully open the wraps if needed to position properly.

  6. Secure and Trim: Lock the Spun Flex and trim the excess.

  7. Add Red Spun Flex Cheeks: Tie in red Spun Flex on both sides of the hook shank, stretch them evenly, and lock securely to create attractive cheek accents.

  8. Attach White Globrite Breathes: Fold a few strands of white Globrite and secure them on top of the hook to serve as breathers.

  9. Form and Finish the Head: Carefully build a neat and bulky head by wrapping thread to hide any exposed materials, avoiding too much tension on the cheeks and breathers. Trim any excess fibers for a clean finish.

  10. Apply UV Resin to Head and Body: Apply UV resin (or varnish) to the head first, carefully avoiding the white breathers. Cure under UV light for about one minute. Then apply a thin coat of resin over the body, ensuring the segmented ribs remain visible, and cure again.

  11. Trim Breathes: Cut the white Globrite breathers to the desired size.
