How to Tie Jeff’s Furled Sally Dry Fly: Step-by-Step Fly Tying Guide

With: Savage Flies

Learn how to tie Jeff’s Furled Sally, a classic yellow Sally stonefly dry fly pattern, using the unique technique of furling synthetic yarn to create an extended body. Perfect for imitating big mayflies and stoneflies in rivers and streams.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Hook and Thread Base

  • Secure the size 12 UMCA U21 hook in the vise.

  • Attach tan 70 denier thread near the hook eye and wrap a smooth thread base without going too far back.

Step 2: Create the Furled Yarn Body

  • Grab a length of yellowish-gold synthetic yarn (not tightly wound).

  • Hold the yarn ends between fingers and spin it two to three times tightly to form a “noodle” shape.

  • Allow the yarn to furl naturally by bringing fingers together; this forms the extended body.

Step 3: Attach the Furled Body

  • Position the furl body along the hook shank to the desired length (approximately 2/3 to 3/4 the hook length).

  • Secure the front end of the furl body to the hook with several wraps of thread.

  • Trim excess fuzz or stray fibers from both ends to neaten the body.

Step 4: Attach the CDC Wing

  • Select a small bunch of tan CDC feathers.

  • Measure the wing length to match the body length.

  • Tie the CDC bunch onto the top of the hook near the front of the body and secure tightly with thread wraps.

Step 5: Prepare and Wrap the Hackle

  • Choose a ginger barred hackle feather.

  • Attach the hackle at the front of the CDC wing tie-in point.

  • Wrap the hackle around the hook 1 to 1.5 times, moving towards the hook eye to create buoyancy.

  • Secure the hackle stem with several thread wraps and trim the excess feather stem.

Step 6: Finish the Fly

  • Build a neat thread head behind the hook eye.

  • Perform a whip finish or use a half hitch tool to secure the thread.

  • Apply a small drop of head cement for durability.

Final Tips

This fly floats well with the hackle supporting the furled body sitting in the surface film. Jeff’s Furled Sally imitates big stoneflies and mayflies, making it a versatile dry fly for trout fishing.
